Thomas has been in the New Hope Fire Company since 1971. He has served as Fire Chief for over 22 years. He is a currently the President of the Bucks County Fire Chiefs and Firefighters Association, the current Chairman of the Keystone State Fire Chiefs Association and 2nd Vice President. He is serving on the Bucks County Public Safety Committee and is a member of the Pa State Wide Advisory Board.

Thomas has had the following certifications in his long career with the fire company. Firefighter I & II, Ladder I & II, Hazmat Operations, Incident Command 100-200, First Aid, CPR, AED, Boating Safety, River and Flood Emergency Specialist, RIT Team, PECO School, Bomb & Explosive Incidents, Tanker Operations, Barn Fires PAAI Arson, Sprinkler & Standpipe, Pump I & II, Engine Company Operations, Fire/Police I, Rescue I, Public Fire Safety Officer, EMT, Large Diameter Hose, Aerial Platform, Scott Air Pack, Fire Marshal, Radiological Emergency Rescue, Fire Guard Commander and ISI Air Pak, is certified as a Sartech III with The National Association of Search & Rescue. Thomas received The Burpee Award in 1983.
